The AI reads your ingredients, merges duplicates, adds up the amounts and sorts everything by aisle.

AI can make mistakes: check the list against your recipes, and always read labels if you have an allergy.

Quick answer

What is a grocery list generator?

A grocery list generator turns the ingredients from your recipes or meal plan into one shopping list. This one uses AI to read your ingredients, then merges duplicates (2 onions plus 1 onion is 3 onions), adds up amounts in the same unit and groups items by store aisle, so you walk the shop once instead of doubling back.

How to use the grocery list generator

  1. Paste your ingredients. Copy them from your recipes, a meal plan or a note on your phone. One per line works best, but the AI also reads lines that list several things.
  2. Press Generate grocery list. The AI reads every line, then duplicates are merged, amounts added up and items grouped by store aisle.
  3. Adjust it. Multiply the amounts for more people, skip water, salt and pepper, or remove anything you do not need with the ×. These changes are instant.
  4. Tick off what you already have at home, then shop for the rest. Tick items again as you put them in the trolley.
  5. Take it with you. Copy the list into your notes app, print it, or save it as a text file.

What a grocery list generator does

Every recipe lists its own ingredients, so a week of meals gives you a pile of overlapping lines: onions in three recipes, olive oil in five, chicken written in two different units. A grocery list generator reads that pile and hands back the list you actually shop from.

You paste the ingredients, and it does the tidying that normally takes a pen and ten minutes: matching the same item written different ways, adding up the amounts, and putting everything in the order you will walk the shop.

Merges duplicates

2 onions in one recipe and 1 in another become 3 onions. Plurals, capital letters and prep notes such as “diced” or “minced” do not matter.

Adds up amounts

Grams, kilograms, ounces and pounds add together, and so do teaspoons, tablespoons, cups and millilitres. 500 g plus 1 lb comes to 954 g.

Sorts by aisle

Produce, meat and seafood, dairy and eggs, pantry, canned goods, sauces, spices, frozen and drinks, in roughly the order you walk through a shop.

Grocery list by aisle: where each item goes

The generator groups your list into these sections. They follow the layout of most supermarkets, with frozen food near the end so it stays cold for the shortest time.

AisleWhat goes there
ProduceFruit, vegetables, fresh herbs, garlic, ginger
Bread & bakeryBread, tortillas, wraps, buns, bagels, naan
Meat & seafoodChicken, beef, pork, bacon, fish, shrimp
Dairy, eggs & chilledMilk, eggs, cheese, yogurt, butter, tofu, plant milks
Pantry & dry goodsRice, pasta, oats, quinoa, lentils, nuts, seeds, nut butters
Canned & jarredBeans, chickpeas, canned tomatoes, broth, olives, salsa, canned tuna

Spices & bakingHerbs and spices, flour, sugar, baking powder, vanilla, cocoa
FrozenFrozen vegetables and fruit, ice cream
Snacks & drinksJuice, coffee, tea, crackers, chips, snack bars

Stores differ, so if yours puts the bread next to the deli or the eggs by the milk, just shop the sections in your own order. The grouping is what saves the time, not the exact sequence.

How to make a grocery list from a meal plan

A routine that keeps the weekly shop short:

  1. Pick the week’s meals first. Choose your dinners, then decide whether breakfast and lunch repeat. Fewer different recipes means a shorter list.
  2. Copy each recipe’s ingredients into the box. Recipe wording such as “1 (14 oz) can chickpeas” or “2 cloves garlic, minced” is fine.
  3. Generate and scan the result. Items that show up in several meals are the ones worth buying in a bigger pack.
  4. Tick off what you already own with the list in hand at the fridge and cupboards.
  5. Shop once, aisle by aisle, with the list on your phone or on paper.

If you would rather skip the recipe hunting, every free 7-day meal plan on this site comes with a finished grocery list. You can also paste any of those lists into the box to scale them up for a family or a second week.

Why planning your shop is worth it

A list built from planned meals means you buy what you will actually cook. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that between 30 and 40 percent of the US food supply goes uneaten, and its Economic Research Service puts the loss at the retail and consumer level at about 31 percent. Buying to a plan is one of the simplest ways to waste less of what you pay for.

Planning also tracks with better eating. In a study of 40,554 French adults, people who planned their meals had a more varied diet that followed nutrition guidelines more closely, and lower odds of obesity. It is an observational study, so it shows an association rather than proof that planning causes those differences. Still, it matches what most people notice: with the week decided, the shop is simpler and the weeknight “what’s for dinner?” question goes away.

Each of these free 7-day plans includes a full grocery list, grouped by aisle. Open one to shop it as it is, or paste the list into the generator above to scale it up.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a grocery list from a meal plan?

Write down the ingredients for each recipe, one per line, paste them into the box and press Make my grocery list. The generator merges duplicates, adds up the amounts and sorts everything by aisle. If you would rather start from a finished list, every one of our free 7-day meal plans comes with one.

Is the grocery list generator free?

Yes. It is free and needs no sign-up. To keep it free for everyone, each visitor can make up to 10 AI lists an hour and 30 a day. Changing the amounts, ticking and removing items do not count.

Does it save or share my list?

To sort your list, your ingredients are sent to our server and to an AI model that reads them. We keep the sorted result for up to 7 days so the same list loads instantly next time, and we never ask for your name or email. Ticks and removed items stay in your browser. Copy, print or save your list before you close the page.

How accurate is it?

The AI reads each line and decides what the ingredient is and which aisle it belongs in. The adding up is done separately by exact unit conversion, not by the AI, so 500 g plus 1 lb always comes to 954 g. If the AI is busy, a simpler built-in sorter makes the list instead and the page tells you so.

Can it add up different units, like grams and pounds?

Yes, within the same kind of measure. Weights (g, kg, oz, lb) add together, and so do volumes (tsp, tbsp, cups, fl oz, ml, L). It cannot turn a count into a weight, so “2 onions” and “200 g onion” stay on one line as “2 + 200 g”.

How does it decide which aisle an item goes in?

The AI places each item in one of eleven aisles, from produce to frozen. Shops lay out their aisles differently, so treat the order as a guide rather than a map of your store.

How do I scale a list for more people?

Use the “Multiply amounts” control. Set it to 2 to double everything, 0.5 to halve it, or 7 if your ingredients cover one day and you want a week. Whole items such as onions round up, because you cannot buy half of one.

Can I print the list or send it to my phone?

Press Print for a clean list that fits a page, Copy to paste it into a notes app or message, or Save to download a text file. Ticks are for use on the page and are not included in the copied text.

How do I keep my grocery bill down?

Plan meals that share ingredients, check your cupboards before you shop, and lean on frozen vegetables and dried staples. Our budget meal plan shows a full week of meals for about $50.
